Painting

So today my painting fell off the wall and I finally got to take it out of the frame that was hanging in the dining room.  The humidity is so bad here that the frame just fell!  Well anyways, this is a painting i did a few years back.  It was an assignment in studio art.  If you can recall, i had a flower photo i took.  It was my first artistic photograph.  When my instructor told the class we had to paint a picture we liked (from a magazine, or anything else), i chose my own.

Here's the photograph:

And here's the painting:

The image i sketched on to the canvas was cropped/zoomed from the original photography, obviously. It's an 18x14' painting.  The base was done with a water base just to get the main color background.  Then after, I began painting in acrylic on top, which is what you see here.  I sketched the original photograph by dividing the photograph in fours.  I also divided the canvas into four sections and took each section at a time.  The hardest part i had with this painting was the shadow you see in the center of the flower that is cast by one of the petals.  Painting a shadow is hard!  Originally, I set out by using black for the shadow and i planned on toning it down with other color to gray.  No. But that wasn't right.  I have to say my instructor helped me out a little by direction.  She told me to go about painting the flower like it was and then use a watered down milky yellow on top.  There is probably 59 different layers under the shadow portion of the painting haha.

I must say I enjoy painting and wish i had more time for it.  It's fun transferring my own photography into a painting form.  There are many altercations you can make and create from your own work and its fun to experiment.

okies okies enjoy : )
